TRUTHS ABOUT GOD

“Yours, O LORD, is the greatness, The power and the glory, The victory and the majesty; For all that is in heaven and in earth is Yours; Yours is the kingdom, O LORD, And You are exalted as head over all. " (1 Chron. 29:11 NKJV).

At Solomon’s coronation, David gave a message to the people. Our verse is part of that message. It especially speaks about God - the praise of God, the possessions of God, and the position of God.

Praise of God – “Yours, O Lord, is the greatness, the power, and the glory, the victory, and the majesty.” This verse speaks of praise for God. It gives high and fitting honor to God. How great God is! His power is awesome, His glory magnificent, He gives us victory, and His majesty makes the best of men as nothing.

Possessions of God – “All that is in the heaven and in earth is Yours.” In the Psalms David speaks of God owning the cattle on a thousand hills (Psalm 50:10). Here it is God owning the entire creation - not only all the cattle but all the earth and all of heaven. This should encourage us regarding His promises. When God promises, He has the resources to fulfill the promises. Indeed, His resources are beyond our comprehension. Further, because God owns everything, we are but stewards of His creation. We are to take care of it as He directs.

Position of God – “Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and You are exalted as head above all.” God is the Sovereign of this world and universe. He is the ruler of everything. Our position is that of subjects. Therefore, we are to obey His laws and His commands. His laws and His commands have supremacy over all the laws of man.

Discipline

In 2 Tim. 1:7 we read, “For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline” (NASB).

Discipline is the Greek word sophronismos (σωφρονισμός = so-fron-is-mos'). The word means moderation, prudence, self-control. It carries the idea of a mind that is self-controlled, disciplined, and properly prioritized, able to stay in control in success or failure. Sophronismos describes sound-mindedness in action and is the opposite of a mindset that is predisposed to excessive self-indulgence or lack of good sense. It describes the individual marked by a sense of sobriety (temperance, moderation), sound judgment.

In Classical Greek, sophronismos was used in the sense of good judgment, improvement, moderation, self-control, etc. It also meant the teaching of morality, the giving of advice, the admonishing of others to manifest moderation, self-control, and general soundness of mind. This word does not appear in the Septuagint. In the New Testament the word carried the idea of self-control or self-discipline. Here Paul reminds Timothy that God has given us a mind which has the power to keep self in check and free from all excitement.

Bible Facts

Ice Age inferred (Job 38:29-30). Prior to the global Flood the earth was apparently subtropical. However shortly after the Flood, the Bible mentions ice often – “By the breath of God ice is given, and the broad waters are frozen” (Job 37:10). Evidently the Ice Age occurred in the centuries following the Flood.

Bible Quiz

What church was described as “neither cold nor hot?”

**Answer to last week’s trivia: Who did Joshua meet near Jericho with a drawn sword? “Commander of the army of the LORD” (Josh. 5:14).

That’s in the Bible

"Ancient of Days

“I watched till thrones were put in place, and the Ancient of Days was seated; His garment was white as snow, and the hair of His head was like pure wool. His throne was a fiery flame, its wheels a burning fire” (Dan. 7:9 NKJV).

The “Ancient of Days” is the eternal God who has no beginning or ending and who oversees all the days from eternity past through the eternal future. This is the sovereign God who exercises control over men and nations. He is the God who has planned all things, and is working out His plan.

Did You Know – Christian History

Samuel Porter Jones was born October 16, 1847 in Oak Bowery, Alabama. He was an American evangelist. Jones studied to be a lawyer, but drinking and gambling soon brought him to the brink of ruin. At his father’s deathbed, he fell on his knees, repented of his sin and trusted Jesus Christ As his savior. One week later he preached his first sermon, and was licensed to preach in the Methodist Church after only three months.

Jones served several pastorates but gained fame as a lecturer and evangelist. Soon he was conducting campaigns in some of America’s largest cities. He was known for his crude wit, coarse stories, and opposition to the liquor traffic. Wherever he preached, liquor stores closed, theaters and jails emptied, and cursing was reduced to whispers. His life was threatened on several occasions. But these did not deter his strong preaching as thousands were saved and cleansed as a result of his ministry.

In the last years of his life, he preached almost daily to audiences of 10,000 and more. It was on a return trip from preaching in Oklahoma City that Jones complained he wasn’t feeling well, took a drink of water, and flopped over dead. It is estimated that well over 500,000 people were converted to Christ as a result of his ministry. One of his converts, Captain Tom Ryman, built him a tabernacle to preach in; it became the Grand Ole’ Opry.
