HISTORY

EMMAUS BIBLE CHAPEL

In the 1970's, the believers at the Bronx Gospel Hall in South Bronx, New York led by Brother George Chambers, an elder at that assembly, were burdened about the establishment of a work in the Northeast Bronx. As a result, in the summer of 1975, two weeks of gospel outreach were conducted at two different locations in the area. This was followed in 1986 by another gospel crusade supported, not only by the Bronx Gospel Hall, but by the other Metropolitan New York assemblies. Altogether, 17 persons were counseled. Brother Herbert Locke, an elder at Bronx Gospel Hall, opened his home for prayer and Bible study each Wednesday mainly for the benefit of the new converts.

These meetings grew and it became evident that the time was ripe for launching the new work. Consequently, premises were rented at 3636 Holland Avenue, Bronx, New York for the purpose. Brothers Herbert Locke and Kelvin Forde and their families and believers numbering 17 left the Bronx Gospel Hall to form the nucleus of the new assembly and the first Breaking of Bread Service was held on Sunday July 19, 1987. Brother Chambers provided assistance in the development stage and served as one of the elders until his relocation to Florida in 1991.

As the Lord continued to demonstrate His favor toward this "work of grace," all areas of the work grew rapidly and the rented premises eventually became inadequate. In the meantime, a Building Fund had been launched for the purpose of purchasing our own building. With much prayer and diligent search. a suitable property was identified at 1250 East Gun Hill Road. This property was acquired in January, 1993 with the assistance of Stewards Foundation.Upon acquisition, the building could only be partially occupied by the church as a tenant was inherited with a lease expiring in October, 1996. But as this "work of grace" continued, the tenant vacated the premises in 1995 and the necessary renovation work proceeded, making the building fully suitable for the service of the Lord. Since moving to 1250 East Gun Hill Road, the church has continued to grow. Currently there are approximately 125 members in fellowship under the spiritual guidance of 3 elders.
